The Warriors no longer have a dearth of wings. Suddenly, its a position of strength as Golden State gears up for a postseason run.
The Golden State Warriors easily dispatched what remained of the New Orleans Pelicans 123-101 on Saturday night in Kevin Durants first game since his Feb. 28 knee injury against Roberto Clemente Womens Jersey the Washington Wizards. While the Warriors were without Stephen Curry (knee contusion), the Pelicans lost an already small margin for error when it was announced that Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins wouldnt suit up.
Durant appeared relieved to rejoin life as a basketball player after an extended stretch of waiting that had him feeling grumpy, in the retelling of Warriors coach Steve Kerr.
It felt normal again, Durant said afterward. Im a basketball player. I love playing basketball; thats my favorite thing to do. So to feel like Im part of the team, to feel like Im a part of this energy that we have, it feels great.
In any event, none of that seemed to matter, as New Orleans season is over and the Warriors have nothing to play for beyond getting Durant into the flow. He returned in a near-optimal situation for a man looking to get back in rhythm, for this wasnt a game but something closer to a game simulation.
Yes, indeed, KD looks healthy and ready for the playoffs even after five weeks on the sidelines.
Durant triumphantly returned to finish with 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, helping the Golden State Warriors beat the undermanned New Orleans Pelicans 123-101 on Saturday night.
With two-time reigning MVP Stephen Curry sidelined by a bruised left knee, Durant shined in 31 minutes and the balanced Warriors won their 14th straight game -- the longest unbeaten run in the NBA this season. Durant hadn't played since getting hurt Feb. 28 at Washington and just resumed full practice Friday.
"I'm extremely proud of him, of course, as always," said mother Wanda Durant, who smiled, signed autographs and posed for selfies with fans . "We just told him to continue to work hard but not move too http://www.officialpiratesproshop.com/Andrew_Mccutchen_Jersey fast. Just told him calm down and relax, the doctors said it wouldn't be long so just wait the time and do what you need to do."
On the first play of the game, Durant submitted his highlight for the evening, then dutifully commenced following Kerrs suggestion (nine defensive rebounds, 16 points). Durant caught a pass in the corner, shot-faked Alexis Ajinca, drove baseline and, in fewer steps than any human should theoretically need, sent down a hammer dunk on the other side of the rim.
I told him defensive rebounding, Kerr said pregame, when asked what he wanted Durant to focus on. Im not concerned with the offense, for good reason. Hes going to score points. Even if he is not shooting well, hes going to score points. The whole thing, when we start our playoff series next week, is we have to be locked in defensively. That has to be his focus tonight and the next two nights before Game 1.
You get a dunk the first play of the game, no matter how long you been out, that feels good, Durant said. And to get some stops and to get an assist, that felt great.
Of Durants contained performance, Kerr said, Its great. Love the fact that he played 31 minutes. I wasnt sure how many minutes we would play him. Kevin wants to play 48 minutes every night, but we have to tell him hes not allowed to do that.
It took a while for Golden States offense to get going, but when it did, it was a complete takeover. The Warriors entered Saturday outscoring teams by an average of 5.7 points per game in the third quarter, the largest average scoring margin for any team in any quarter this season. Saturday was another classic Warriors third-quarter beatdown, a 39-point stretch that saw Durant get into something of a comfort zone -- insofar as his teams breakneck pace can be comfortable.
Klay Thompson scored 20 points, Draymond Green had 13 points and eight rebounds, and the do-everything Warriors sure look poised for another deep playoff run.
Coach Steve Kerr joked about "three meaningless games" remaining after the NBA's top team wrapped up the best record and No. 1 seed in the Western Conference during Wednesday's win at Phoenix.
Having Durant back certainly brought some energy.
"I think he looked great. It's going to be hard for anybody to take off a month and come back and put on a great show," Thompson said. "It was great to see that first play, him attacking the rim like that."
Durant raised both hands to the sky and pointed when he took the court before tipoff. His shot wasn't quite as consistent as usual -- 6 for 15 and missing all four of his 3-point tries -- as he eases his way back to form after such a long layoff.
Shaun Livingston started for Curry and had 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting and six assists, Andre Iguodala added 15 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Ian Clark (17) and JaVale McGee (16) also scored in double digits.
Kerr kept Green http://www.authenticramsofficialshop.com/Nike-Cody-Wichmann-Jersey.html and Thompson below 30 minutes as planned.
Jordan Crawford scored 21 points off the bench and Alexis Ajinca added 17 as New Orleans had nine healthy bodies playing on a back-to-back following a loss at Denver on Friday.
Simply put, Durant fueled the run that broke the game open. At the 4:35 mark of the third, he drove in for a layup. On the next possession, he turned a missed Jrue Holiday 3-pointer into a pass ahead for a Klay Thompson 3-pointer. Then, on the following possession, he turned another missed Pelicans 3 into another rebound and an outlet pass for a JaVale McGee slam. Smiles were wide and widely shared on the Warriors' bench. An eight-point halftime lead turned into a 25-point Warriors cushion heading into the fourth.
By the time the game ended, seven Warriors had hit double-figure scoring. Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston each continued their recent hot streaks, and Ian Clark made a surprise showing with 17 points. The one drawback on an otherwise-positive night was Matt Barnes injuring his ankle in the second quarter; it was an unfortunate event to be sure, but one with a cushioned impact for Golden State now that Durant is back.
Strauss on Kevin Durant's return and more Warriors reporter Ethan Strauss weighs in on Kevin Durant's performance in his return from injury and looks ahead to Golden State's possibly playoff matchups.
After a 19-game absence, Kevin Durant had to shake off the rust. Following a slow first half, the 28-year-old returned to form and led the Warriors in minutes played (31) and rebounds (10) in their 123-101 win.
The Warriors will be the favorites, if not overwhelming favorites, now that their superstar small forward has returned. The main question is whether Curry (projected http://www.authenticramsofficialshop.com/Nike-Todd-Gurley-Jersey.html to return on Monday against the Utah Jazz) can maintain his hot streak amid Durants reintroduction.
The Warriors won their 14th straight game on Saturday night vs. the Pelicans. With just two games left, Golden State can break the NBA record for consecutive wins to close out a regular season.
